   What's New:

Dear CT NWCO Association Member,

The past and present board of directors has been discussing with the D.E.P. Wildlife Division the criteria that will be required for the lethal control of Canadian Geese. At the meeting on April 13, 2006, the D.E.P. and the officers of the NWCO Association agreed upon the following requirements:

  1. The operator must show proof of completion of an approved training on the management of urban Canadian Geese.
  2. Demonstrate field experience in the live capture and handling of geese in a minimum of 3 round ups at separate locations.
  3. Attend a Connecticut specific goose control training class, with a minimum of 4 hours classroom instruction.
  4. Demonstrate adequate experience or field training in AVMA approved euthanasia methods for geese.
  5. Proof of having the necessary equipment to conduct the activity.
  6. Proof of personal liability insurance of $500,000 minimum coverage.

The first 3 requirements are all practical training and experience that can be acquired in several ways.

For the first requirement, proof from the National Goose Management Academy would currently be sufficient. The association will be looking to provide this training at a later date, possibly in conjunction with NWCOA or the NGM Academy.

The second requirement could also be obtained through the NGM Academy with proof of 3 round ups at separate locations or could be obtained by working with the D.E.P. in their banding program.

The third requirement would be a training session presented by the CT NWCO Association using an outline provided by the D.E.P. Wildlife Division.

The last three would have to be listed or tied to the management plan that needs to be submitted to the Wildlife Division for approval of the special permit that will be required.

For the members that would like to get the hands-on training this year on rounding up geese that would meet requirement 3, please contact myself at (203) 375-1211 or Mark Jones at (203) 792-8682 for details on how you may obtain this training.

Sincerely,
Thomas Logan
CWCP, V.P. CT NWCO Association
